YARNS
Hats must be made with 100% wool, superwash preferred. Some examples of yarns that are frequently used are:
Cascade yarns 220 superwash
Fibra Natura Lima superwash wool
Knit Picks Swish Worsted Yarn superwash
These are just examples. Any yarn that is 100% wool and preferably can be machine washed is fine. Feel free to email with any questions or if you are not sure.
PATTERNS
You can knit or crochet ANY pattern you want to. We have no requirements on the pattern. There is a wide variety and people knit and crochet wild and complex hats and people knit and crochet plain, simple hats. Feel free to do what appeals to you and we are sure there is a Sailor who will love it.
We have included some patterns as suggestions if you don’t know where to start.
FINISHED HATS
Once you have completed your hats, please email us for the mailing address. Feel free to include notes to those who will receive your hats. Please attach the note to the hat. Many tie theirs on with leftover yarn. Put them in a box and send them off. We will take it from here.
BEHIND THE SCENES
When your hats arrive, we will let you know they arrived by email or on Ravelry if you have included that information.
We have already selected ships for 2021. Normally, once we know an approximate number of hats, we start the decision process for which ship(s) to send the hats to. We only look at ships that are deployed and that we have enough hats for everyone on the ship. We will announce the selected ships on Ravelry, Facebook and here on our web site. We take pictures of all the hats before they are sent and will also publish the pictures in the same places.
FINALLY
We knit and crochet hats every year! This is an ongoing program and we hope you will join us.
