Ring My Bell

 YaYaLovesToKnit, May 28, 2018

An easy peasy cap knit using just knit and purl stitches. A good project for new knitters who want a chance to practice their knit and purl stitches while working in the round, but get more than a plain hat.

It’s also a good opportunity to use up those small balls of leftover yarn. Change colors wherever you wish.

Suitable for either gender.

Song of the Day: “Ring My Bell” by Anita Ward, a fun 1979 song from the disco era

Size: adult

The sample hat measures 8¼” from top to bottom, and 18" around the bottom band (unstretched). The hat is stretchy enough to fit an adult size head comfortably. NOTE: The mannequin head used to model the hat measures 22½” around.

 Yarn: worsted

The sample hat was knit using 56 grams/159 yards of FibraNatura Lima (100% superwash wool, 100 grams/284 yards per ball) in blue. NOTE: Lima is a lightweight worsted yarn. If you use a worsted weight yarn that’s not as light, consider changing to a US 07 after completing the 2nd instruction* in the pattern. If you do that, continue with US 07 for the remainder of the hat.

Needles: US 06 circular needles, plus US 06 double pointed needles.

Other tools: stitch marker, tapestry/darning needle

Gauge: 20 sts x 26 rnds = 4” square

Abbreviations used:

k= knit

k2tog = knit two stitches together

p = purl

st(s) = stitch(es)

The Small Purl Rings are worked as follows

1. Purl 2 rounds.

2. Knit 2 rounds.

Begin pattern:

Using the US 06 circular needle, cast on 90 sts. Taking care to not twist the stitches, place the stitch marker to indicate the beginning of round, and join to begin knitting in the round.

Knit 3 rounds of stockinette to form the rolled edge. If you don’t care for the look of a rolled edge, please feel free to skip this step.

1. Repeat the Small Purl Rings 4 times, ending with step 2.

2. Knit 2 rounds*.

3. Repeat the Small Purl Rings 3 times, ending with step 2.

4. Knit 2 rounds.

5. Repeat the Small Purl Rings 2 times, ending with step 2.

6. Knit 2 rounds.

7. Repeat the Small Purl Rings once, ending with step 2.

8. Knit 2 rounds.

9. Repeat the Small Purl Rings once again, ending with step 2.

10. Knit 2 rounds.

For a slouchier fit, work steps 9 and 10 once or twice more times.

Crown of Hat (decreases)

You will be reducing the number of stitches on the needles as you work this section. When the stitches on the needles are too few to knit comfortably with the circular needle, change to the double pointed needles.

2. Knit around.

3. Repeat the Small Purl Rings once, ending with step 2.

4. [K2, k2tog] around – 20 sts decreased – 60 sts remain.

5. Knit around.

6. Repeat the Small Purl Rings once, ending with step 2.

7. [K1, k2tog] around – 40 sts remain.

8. Knit around.

9. Repeat the Small Purl Rings once, ending with step 2.

10. {K2tog] around – 20 sts remain.

11. Knit around.

12. Repeat the Small Purl Rings once, ending with

step 2.

13. [K2tog] around – 10 sts remain.

14. Knit around.

15. Purl 2 rounds.

Finishing: Cut the yarn leaving at least a 12” yarn end. Using the darning needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 10 stitches at least twice; cinch snugly and anchor the yarn.
